Tom is the creator and maintainer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multicians.org\/\">multicians.org<\/a>, which &#8220;presents the story of the Multics operating system for people interested in the system&#8217;s history&#8221;. Since Tom was at MIT in the 1960s, I thought he might have heard of the \u2018Tome\u2019, so I sent him an email. He hadn&#8217;t heard of it, but he suggested several leads for me to follow: <a href=\"https:\/\/computerhistory.org\/profile\/jean-sammet\/\">Jean<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dblp.org\/pid\/14\/5331.html\">Samme<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.informatik.uni-trier.de\/~ley\/db\/indices\/a-tree\/s\/Sammet:Jean_E=.html\">t<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garlic.com\/~lynn\/\">Lynn Wheeler <\/a>, the IBM folks I&#8217;d worked with in the 1970s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.dartmouth.edu\/~doug\/\">Doug McIlroy<\/a> (&#8220;Bell Labs probably got a copy and may even know where in the Labs it was&#8221;), and Frank da Cruz, who maintains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/computinghistory\/\">Columbia University Computing History<\/a> (for example, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/acis\/history\/backus.html\">John Backus<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong> 2024\/05\/08: Updated Columbia URL.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Van Vleck and I met at Tandem in 1981.
